Granada: The Alhambra and the Albaicín

A full day shaped around your Nasrid Palaces slot: the Alhambra at an unhurried pace, then the Albaicín's lanes and viewpoints as the palace walls turn gold.

The Alhambra is the reason many travellers come to Spain, and it deserves a day without pressure. This private experience is built backwards from the one fixed point of any visit: the time printed on your Nasrid Palaces ticket. Everything else, from your pick-up time to lunch and the evening walk, is arranged around it.

You begin with the palace city itself. The order depends on your slot: with an early time, you go straight through the Medina to the Nasrid Palaces and see the Alcazaba and the Generalife afterwards; with a later one, you start at the Alcazaba's watchtower for an overview of Granada. Inside the palaces, take time with the Court of the Myrtles, the Hall of the Ambassadors and the Court of the Lions, where poems by Ibn Zamrak and the Nasrid motto, "There is no victor but God", run along the walls.

After a long morning on foot, the afternoon slows down. Lunch, a rest, and then the car takes you up to the top of the Albaicín, so the walk is downhill. The old Muslim quarter faces the Alhambra across the Darro valley; its whitewashed lanes, walled gardens and viewpoints offer the city's most famous panorama, with the Sierra Nevada behind the palace. The garden of the Mezquita Mayor, next to San Nicolás, is a calmer spot when it is open to visitors.

As the light fades, finish along the Paseo de los Tristes, by the river and beneath the illuminated walls.

Tickets for the Alhambra are personal and limited, so secure them on the official website as early as possible; our Alhambra tickets guide explains how. This experience is part of our private tours in Andalusia and is arranged on request: availability and price are confirmed by the team after reviewing your dates.

How the day flows

Indicative order — we adapt it to your pace, the heat and your tickets.

  1. Hotel pick-up

Your driver collects you with enough margin to reach the Alhambra entrance well before your Nasrid Palaces slot.

  2. The Alhambra

The Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces at your time, the Palace of Charles V and the Generalife gardens, in the order that best suits your slot. Allow three to four hours.

  3. Lunch and rest

A break for lunch and, if you wish, time back at the hotel during the warmest hours.

  4. The Albaicín

Drop-off at the top of the old Muslim quarter, then a gentle walk down past the Mirador de San Nicolás, the garden of the Mezquita Mayor and the quieter lanes.

  5. Paseo de los Tristes and return

End beneath the illuminated Alhambra walls along the River Darro before returning to your hotel.
