Córdoba: The Mosque-Cathedral and the Jewish Quarter
A calm half day in the former capital of the Caliphate: the Mosque-Cathedral's forest of arches, the flower-filled lanes of the Judería and sunset over the Roman bridge.

Córdoba was once among the largest and most cultivated cities in Europe, the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate of Al-Andalus. Today it is quieter and more intimate than Seville or Granada, and its heart is a single extraordinary building. This private half day lets you discover it at a calm pace, with a driver to handle the parts that are hard on foot.
The visit begins at the Mosque-Cathedral. You enter through the Patio de los Naranjos, the orange-tree courtyard where worshippers once performed ablutions, and step into a forest of more than eight hundred columns topped by double arches striped in red brick and white stone. Begun in 785 by Abd al-Rahman I, the mosque was enlarged over two centuries; its high point is the mihrab of al-Hakam II, glittering with mosaics made with the help of a Byzantine craftsman. In the sixteenth century a Renaissance cathedral was built at its centre, and the building remains an active cathedral today. Visitors are asked to dress modestly and to respect it as a place of worship.
From there, the lanes of the Judería, the old Jewish Quarter, lead past whitewashed walls and flower-filled patios to the small medieval synagogue and the statue of the philosopher Maimonides, born in Córdoba. It is a good moment for a drink in a shaded square or a relaxed lunch.
End by crossing the Roman bridge, where the view back to the Mosque-Cathedral and the old city is at its most beautiful in the late afternoon.
With more time, add Medina Azahara, the caliphal city west of Córdoba, on request. Read the full story on our Al-Andalus heritage trail, or include this visit in a wider Andalusia route with our private tours. Arranged on request; the team confirms availability and price after reviewing your dates.
