A full day in the city of three cultures, from the classic panorama across the Tagus to the cathedral, El Greco's masterpiece, medieval synagogues and a mosque built in 999.
from €390 / vehicleFinal total in euros. See your exact price, we confirm availability, then you pay online.

Toledo rises on a rocky hill almost encircled by the River Tagus, and few places in Spain show so clearly how Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities shaped one city. It is about an hour from Madrid by road, which makes it the most rewarding day trip from the capital, and a private car turns it into a relaxed day rather than a rushed one.
The day begins across the river at the Mirador del Valle, where the whole city appears at once: the cathedral spire, the square bulk of the Alcázar and the tight web of streets in between. From there, your driver takes you as close to the historic centre as access allows.
Inside the old town, the Gothic cathedral is one of Spain's finest, with a remarkable collection of art in its sacristy. A short walk away, the small church of Santo Tomé holds El Greco's The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, one of the great paintings of the Spanish Renaissance.
After lunch, the afternoon is for Toledo's layered past. In the old Jewish quarter, the synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, with its white horseshoe arches, and El Tránsito, with its carved stucco and Hebrew inscriptions, reveal the Mudéjar craftsmanship that served all three faiths. A little further, the mosque of Bab al-Mardum, now called Cristo de la Luz, still carries the Kufic inscription recording its construction in 999. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Toledo was famous as a centre where Arabic works of science and philosophy were translated for Europe.
Before heading back, try the city's almond marzipan. Compare Toledo with other options in our guide to day trips from Madrid, or read more on the Al-Andalus heritage trail.
